These 5 60s/70s Looks Are So Groovy

As September slips away from us and we move to October, we firmly embrace the season of autumn. For me, autumn reminds me of lots of warm-toned colours, plaid, and boots. Consequently, those match up with some of the biggest trends from my favourite fashion eras. One of my favourite styles is definitely a spin off of 60s and 70s fashion. As I mentioned in last week’s Fall Trends post, I absolutely love the bright colours, psychedelic prints, and grand silhouettes of the eras. Needless to say, I have started incorporating elements from the styles of the two decades into my own style. For all my outfits, I will be wearing my Movement frames from Eyebuydirect, for that added vintage feel. While I’m not directly copying styles, I’m using them as inspiration for my own outfits while giving them a modern touch. Here’s some outfits I’ve come up with:

Brown Turtleneck + Brown Plaid Pants + Reebok shoes

Our first look is this simple but on-point brown look. As many of you have seen, turtlenecks seemed to sweep the 70s and I kept that notion alive here. I paired this thrifted Jacob turtleneck with these brown and beige plaid pants from Simons, and finished off with my classic Reebok shoes. As I mentioned briefly, warm-toned colours were all the rage so this all-brown fit is the opposite of bland for this era. This outfit is an easy way to incorporate the silhouettes and colours of the era without looking like you’re headed to a Halloween party!

Black Shift Dress + Floral Blouse + Black Tights + Loafers

This is one of my favourite outfits, quite honestly. When I was storyboarding my outfits for this week and I dreamt this one up, I got so excited. I had bought this black shift dress from Simons a few months ago but didn’t have the chance to wear it because of the lockdowns so I found an excuse to wear it, finally! I paired that super adorable shift dress with this floral top I bought from H&M a few years ago, some black tights, my trusty black purse, and my thrifted loafers. The blouse I’m wearing is an absolute gem. It has this bow detail in the front that I’m obsessed with. You can tie it up in a bow or leave the fabric down and it gives the top more dimension without changing anything significant about the piece. We love multi-purposing items! I thought the half-up ponytail hairstyle simulated the classic 1960’s “beehive” hairstyle with a modern twist. Overall, very happy with this look.

Psychedelic-Print Blouse + Levi’s Jeans + Reebok sneakers

Oh, this top. This top! I remember finding it among all the others one Sunday while thrifting and thought “wow, as if someone gave this away!”. I usually say that about a lot of the items I find but this one in particular stood out for me. As I said, it is thrifted but it is originally from BCBG Maxazria! I decided to pair this top with my Levi’s jeans to tone down the busy print of the shirt. While these jeans are more of a straight cut, they sort of flare at the bottom which gets me as close to bellbottom jeans as we’re going to get, for now. Another lowkey way to dress in 70s fashion without sticking out like a sore thumb!

Denim Jumpsuit + Beige Turtleneck + Platform Boots

This is one of the most 70s outfits I have. The denim jumpsuit even has an inscription on it with ‘1978’ on it. Whether that means it was made that year or it is relevant to 1978, it is right on brand. Funnily enough, I bought this jumpsuit in the Halloween costume section of my local Value Village but I didn’t care because it looked so good. As it was a chillier fall day, I decided to pair this wonderful jumpsuit with a beige/tan turtleneck from H&M, and these super-cool platform boots that I also thrifted. These boots were made for walking and that’s exactly what I did!

Orange Collared Top + Brown Plaid Pants + Beige Overcoat

I went heavy on the ‘warm tone’ look with this one. I am wearing my precious Frank & Oak collared shirt, the brown plaid pants from last week’s ‘70s style’ look, and my beautiful beige overcoat from H&M. This look provides you with all of that 70s goodness while also keeping cool, clean, and comfortable. I could totally see myself in this outfit with big Farrah Fawcett hair, on some roller-blades, or something like that.

Honourable mention: Bohemian Flare-Sleeve Top

Bonus item! This is an honourable mention because I didn’t have enough time to shoot an outfit with this but this post would not be complete without it. This is a flowy thrifted top originally from Forever 21. The top has a beautiful 70s-esque pattern and an open back. What a wonderful piece!

And with that, we conclude this week’s post! I’ll be back next week with more fashion content, but until then, comment what you thought was the best outfit or how you would style a 70s look! Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram for more fashion content!
