5 Ways to Use Colour To Brighten Up Your Look

Winter is fast approaching and that can mean a spell of seasonal depression. Instead of curling into whatever drab basics and rut of dissatisfaction, use the psychology of colour to trick your brain into a better mood! I’m not sure if this is a true scientific practice, but I know that I always feel a little bit more cheery if I pop on some extra colour in my outfit. Lucky for you, I have compiled a short list of what I wore recently that has a pop of bold and fun colours to help bring back your inspiration!

  1. Hot Pink + Burnt Orange

This look was done completely by accident but I do not regret a thing because it has honestly become one of my favourites. I was thrifting the other week and bought these two pieces separately and when I tried them on upon my arrival home, I fell in love with the outfit in front of me. The two items in question are the wonderful hot pink cardigan and 70’s dream pants. The cardigan ($6.99) is thrifted, of course, but originally from Dynamite. The pants ($9.99) are thrifted but from an unknown original source as the label was ripped off. I paired this look with my wonderful white collared blouse and my thrifted black boots. I decided to accessorize with pearl earrings as it complemented the buttons on the cardigan. Side note: I was told I looked like Harry Styles and a 70s elementary school teacher and I pride myself on that.

2. Purple + Orange

This is a very good outfit as it looks like I have put a real effort but I did not have the discomfort of “I’m in nice clothes”. Here, I’m wearing a sweater from H&M, paired (again) with my white collared shirt, my new favourite blue boyfriend jeans from Old Navy, and winter boots from Winners. What I find visually appealing about this outfit is the contrast between the purple and orange on the sweater in juxtaposition to the dark blue of the jeans. Also, the 70’s style glasses from Eyebuydirect and bubble ponytail put the cherry on top of the metaphorical outfit cake.

3. Bubblegum Pink + Forest Green

I remember I saw this colour combination on Pinterest and absolutely loved it. I had to try it for myself. So, I decided to put on my pink sweater from Simons and my green paper-bag pants, also from Simons. I paired the overall look with black boots as the outfit was already busy enough. I’m really happy with the way it turned out and I think it delivers the right amount of colour without being too ‘in your face’.

4. Green + Red + Burnt Orange

I brought back the burnt orange pants for another outfit because they are such an interesting colour! I thought the warm tones would go really well with this multi-coloured sweater vest ($3.99) I thrifted a couple years ago. I added a white button up underneath, popped on my black belt and brought out my ol’ faithfuls, my Reeboks. I think that the overall look gives 70s realness and I’m here for it.

Pro tip: maybe don’t wear long pants when it’s raining that day, your pants may get wet!

5. Forest Green

Go on and give us Slytherin vibes, girl! I honestly felt like I was walking into Hogwarts when I was wearing this outfit. Such a confidence boost! So, here, I have a thrifted white button up, a clip-on tie (from that one time my elementary school had tie day for spirit week), a thrifted green cardigan I bought three years ago, thrifted ultra high-waisted pants, and black boots.

And that’s the list! I would like to conclude that there is no colour combination that is off-limits, if they say it shouldn’t go together, they’re probably too scared to look good! Be creative and bold! I hope you found something that was new and inspirational! As always, I would appreciate if you would follow my instagram and comment to show your support!
