Trends To Watch In 2022

With every new year comes new trends to look out for. This is the exciting part of every year, if you ask me. This is when we see what will make a comeback, what is going away, and what is completely new. I have read many fashion articles detailing the experts’ opinions on what this year brings as far as trends and I can say that I am on board with most of them. In this blog post, I will be showing you my personal favourites and those you can count on me to be sporting all of 2022. Let’s jump in!

Bold Colours

Ah, yes! The trend that many of you have seen me sporting in the last few weeks if you follow the blog and my instagram. I am absolutely loving embracing all of the bold hues that the colour spectrum has to offer. And you know what? Don’t be scared of mixing and matching! All over Pinterest, there are pictures of people at Fashion Weeks around the world mixing patterns and bold colours together and it looks positively high-end chic! While a neutral, basic outfit is a great go-to if one has “nothing to wear”, the colourful outfit offers a chance to show off some vibrant personality! Here, I showcase two colourful outfits I did over the last two weeks. The first is a very Gucci-esque outfit. I have my best-fitting burnt orange trousers, my H&M purple sweater, layered on top of my favourite collared shirt. While it is a high fashion look, it probably cost me somewhere around 25$ to put together. The second outfit is my new green turtleneck from H&M and thrifted black trousers. I accessorized with this belt from my grandmother and my black and white coat.

Regency-core

Anybody who has been keeping up with Netflix shows in the last year or so will know exactly what this is about. Inspired by shows like The Crown and Bridgerton, this regal look is in style! Regency-core consists of anything you would see on a member of the royal family from long ago or currently. Examples include pearls, corsets, refined hemlines, tweed jacket, and A-line dresses, to name a few. Here I have this faux leather A-line dress from Zara (I thrifted it for 10$!), with black nylons, a thrifted black cardigan, all accentuated with pearl earrings and necklace. In the second, it’s not as much regency-core in the classic feminine sense but more-so a play on something I’ve seen male members of the royal family wear while in Scotland and the such. Some would say it even looks a little Peaky Blinders-y. It comprises of my Joe Fresh white collared shirt, thrifted green vest, black trousers, topped off my grey newsboy cap.

Maximalism

Along the same lines as the ‘Bold Colours’ section of this blog post, maximalism is going after the big and bold. The minimalist trend that has been sweeping media over the last few years ensured one was wearing things that went well together but that would make one blend in, and definitely not stand out. 2022 is the year of “look at me”!!! We are going after bold colours, yes, but also bold silhouettes, too. A great start to this is this amazing top from H&M that has immense shoulders and gives off a very powerful vibe. To emphasize the maximalism thing even further, I paired this already outrageous top with a (usually conflicting) patterned trouser. People are definitely going to be looking at you if you head out in this outfit! The second outfit is maximalist in the way that it layers lots of different colours and patterns together. It’s comprised of my white collared shirt, a beige Gap sweater, thrifted patterned blazer, and brown trousers. I’m only going to be building from here!

Mini Bags

While 2021 had the large tote trend, 2022 is going the other direction completely. Mini bags are on every runway, it seems. Not only are fashion experts and influencers leaning toward mini bags, they’re going towards bright and colourful mini bags. Essentially, these mini bags should be the accent piece to the outfit. As I have not amassed a collection of mini bags yet, I settle for this very cute Guess bag that my boyfriend’s grandmother gave me. I hope this bag finds some colourful friends as the year goes on!

More Oversized

Continuing a trend from last year, 2022 is still loving the oversized look. That can be done with an oversized blazer, oversized shirts, etc. That is precisely what I have done here. I am wearing an oversized blazer look with the blazer being thrifted, a t-shirt from Uniqlo, and jeans from Old Navy to make a business casual look. Next, I have another business casual look with this thrifted white collared shirt from Bellissimo, Frank and Oak black jeans, a belt that my grandmother gave to me, and my usual jewelry.

Skirts, Skirts, Skirts

There are a few trends surrounding skirts this year but I am liking longer skirts and those with slits down the leg. This outfit has this pink Simons sweater, thrifted leopard skirt, black nylons, and a thrifted black beret. This outfit really feels like I’m living an episode of Emily in Paris. Other skirt trends that I have not built outfits for are mini skirts and “vacation-type skirts”.

That’s the list! I hope you found something you think you could implement into your wardrobe this year. As always, leave a comment about what you thought was the best outfit or what you would like to see next from OMG. Follow me on Instagram for more fashion content!
